Audio Drawings

December 12, 2008

Project description: each student will select a non-lyrical musical composition of their choice and visually represent it through a two-dimensional drawing.

My choice of music was Brahms Hungarian Dance No.5. This is one of my favorite classical music pieces. When I listen to the music I found there were three quite clear parts in the song, and I chose to make three different drawing – one significant for each part.

My chose of paper was mylar, because I like to work with that material. I used ink, gesso and char-kole.

The first part is soft music, but with a bit of power as well. It is much violins playing, and I thought that long brushstroke and grey color will explain this music piece very well.

The second part is the most powerful because they start with percussion instrument. I chose to illustrate this with much ink. But there are two times in this part they just play the violins and then I chose to make it a little bit lighter.

The third part was happiest so I chose to make this painting lightest. They play instruments like flutes and triangle and when they did that it felt like dots, so I made that. But they play also violin and I have illustrated that with darker lines in the drawing.

This was a fun, but a little bit difficult project. I listen to many different songs before I finally chose the Hungarian Dance No.5. I was very satisfied with my choice of music, but it took very long time for me to decide how I should show the music in a painting. From the beginning my thought was to do just ONE drawing, but I thought it was more interesting to divide into three parts. Especially when the parts are very obvious in the music piece, and I think it should have been messy if I only have had one painting.

2D Wood Floor Sculptures

December 11, 2008

This was a project we did a long time ago, so I don´t really remember all the details or instructions.

But I think it was something like this;

We were divided into groups with three persons in every group. We should choose approximately 6 wood pieces each (totally 20 pieces). Then we got different instructions about how we should compose the wood blocks.

Here are some:

-          Build whatever you want

-          Build a shape

-          Build a shape with no negative space

-          Build something with negative space that look like one of the wood block

-          Build something simple that you could do identical one year later

This assignment was okay, not that fun. It was nice to cooperate with the classmates, but it was hard to know when we were done with our shape, because we start to change it over and over again. My favorite was the one when we could chose to do whatever we want. It looks so symmetrical and nice, but not in a boring way.

The class was divided into small groups with three students in every group. The group chose four different color of paper. Our group chose silver, orange, purple and yellow. We got five plexiglass slides and the assignment was to cut the paper in different shapes and place the paper between the different layers.

Our group made up simple rules to follow, for example that we should have the same kind of shape on each layer. The first one was just a big square in silver, it become the background. The second layer was only lines and bars. The third was circles and the fourth squares.

The result was quit cool, it was nice to see the depth in the creation. I think the colors was a great combination, but maybe it was just a little bit too much 70s and the shapes as well seem to fit that era.

Diebenkorn Drawing

December 11, 2008

Diebenkorn Drawing

The assignment was to make a big Diebenkorn drawing together with a classmate. I and Erika got a copy of a Diebenkorn painting and then we took a really big paper and start to draw with char-kole. We chose to draw the big areas first, and then as the time went on we draw more detailed things.

I thought it was a little bit difficult to draw two persons on the same drawing, because I started somewhere and Erica somewhere else. And in the end it doesn’t fit in the middle, so we needed to do some changes in the end.

And another thing that was difficult was that I made a mistake and drew a black line, where it should be a white area. And I tried to erase it, but afterwards it was still possible to see that I made a wrong line. That was bad.
