Checkers with Char-Kole

November 10, 2008

The assignment was to play the game checkers. I have never done it before, so the whole thing was quite new to me. I and Erica took a big paper that covered the entire table space between us. Then we began to draw a big square, with 64 smaller squares in it. One small square was 2*2 inches.

After Erica had told me the rules we started to play the game. She had the black marks and I the white marks. We made the markers with char-kole.  Every time we moved a marker, we drew it in a new square and erased the old marker. After a while it was quite messy on the game plan. I´m so glad that I had the white markers, because I didn´t need to erase that much then.

I liked to play that game and the paper looked quite cool afterwards. I won also by the way, so I was happy! But it was not so fun to erase all the time and get char-kole all over the body.

Checkers with Char-Kole

The project was to create a drawing with similar technique that the artist Eve Aschheim has used in her beautiful paintings in the Weatherspoon. We visit the exhibition one time with the class, one time by our self and then one more time when the project was done.

I enjoyed this assignment. I thought it was fun to paint on mylar paper. It was such an amazing feeling. I was very satisfied with my drawing, I thought it was clean and the lines were perfect. But.. maybe it was too clean and not quite similar to Aschheims work. Here is the first one;

I decided to add some graphite in the painting to see if it would be different. The answer is yes. Now it becomes more similar with Eves paintings, but I cannot decide with one I like the best!

We used a straight-edge which we had fixed our pencil on. The assignment was to draw something we had found outside, I found a kind of cone. I think the restriction was to only draw lines. It was quit hard to draw because the pencil was so far away, and it was difficult to have control over it. But I think it was innovative to use the pencil in this way.

Assignment: Pick a movie and study an extra!

Description of the Extra

This is a scene from the movie Dead Poets Society. The extra is wearing a school uniform, as well as the other boys. Grey jumper and white shirt. He has brown hair. He is in a classroom and they are totally 18 students. He and 7 other boys are sitting in the classroom, whereas 10 boys are standing on their benches. The extra is sitting in the left lower corner. He has a thick book in front of him, probably about poetry. He has his head bent down and staring/reading his book. He looked a little bit ashamed. It seems like the things happens around him doesn´t affect him. He is quite passive.

Why I selected this Extra?

I like this movie because it so capture and this is one of my favorite scenes, because it is so beautiful symmetry in the “picture”. The boys are creating a nice square when they are standing on their desks. It had not been that beautiful view if the extra also was standing on the desks. The extra is highlighting the other boys on their benches.  And it hadn´t been the same effect if not the extra have been there. He is so unaffected, and don´t care what the other boys are doing.

It was very interesting to see a movie and watch everything that happened around the main role. I saw so much things that I never have taken notice of before. In the future I think I´m going to observe “smaller things” which take place the background instead of always focus on the main character.

Each student was invited to go out and pick a wooden stick. The next step was to get a paper and a small bowl of water included a few drops ink. In the front of the classroom there was placed different objects, one at the time, which we should paint with our stick as a brush. Some objects were for example skeleton, vacuum cleaner, table, chair and a bicycle wheel. Every time we shifted item we added some more ink in the water, so it becomes darker and darker. I really enjoyed this assignment. First of all it was cool to paint with a stick, and secondly it was amazing to see how the painting was changed. From the beginning it was so light and for every item we painted it become darker.

In the beginning of the project we picked one credit card and then with help of the card draw 3 small squares on 6 papers. It becomes totally 9 horizontal squares and 9 vertical. The purpose was to draw something we could find in the art building and carefully choose where we should put the object in the square. We used only graphite and we were allowed to draw both lines and values. This was an amusing but stressful assignment. We had only 1-1,5h to make 18 drawings.

Tate St. Drawing

October 15, 2008

The assignment was to draw lines we could find in Tate Street Coffee House for 1h. I think I misunderstood this assignment, because I thought we only should draw lines that we could find and not that it should imagine something special. When I come to the class and saw the other students’ drawings I was dissatisfied with my own. I think I´ve could make a better drawing if I have understand the instructions a little bit better. But one thing I was pleased with was that I only draw lines and no values at all.

The assignment was to make a physical event with different values. I am living on the fifth floor in I-house. I have a mission that not use the elevator, and use the stairs instead. I count how many times I went up or down through the stairs every day, and I made this for 10 days. Some days I was more active than others, when I was much lazier and use the elevator. Here is the result.

This was a fun and different assignment. I liked it and got a lot of exercise too. The funny thing is that I have never used the elevator after the assignment, only the stairs! So I think the project resulted in something very good!

Value Scale

October 15, 2008

Here is just a normal value scale from 1 to 10, with the lightest as one and darkest as ten. I think it was a little bit tricky to get the right color in the right value on the scale. The assignment claimed lot of precision.

The next assignment with the “shape” theme was with help of different rules paint graphite bar and line, white gesso bar, grey gesso bar and thin black bar over the shapes. The different methods have each three different restrictions; horizontal across side to side, vertical top to bottom, off one side only. We should use 5 “actions” for each drawing, and every action should be selected a minimum of 5 times. It was so many rules in this project and I was so afraid to fail, but I come up with a good system and I think I made all lines and bars right. I liked my shapes before all the lines and bars, so from the beginning I didn´t like this new idea. But when I saw the finish work I was very happy over my paintings anyway!
